A Little Look Into The Causes Behind Bad Self Esteem In People
What do you see when you look in the mirror? Is it someone that you are proud of? Is it a person that you admire and respect? If not, there may be several reasons. Here are some causes of low self esteem.
Appearance
How you look may determine your self-image. If you are a little different from the norm, you may attract ridicule. Perhaps your nose is larger than most. You may have a problem with your weight. It does not take much, for people to tease.
Often times, it begins in childhood. Children tease others to keep unwanted attention from themselves. They may feel insecure. By teasing others, it gives them a feeling of superiority. Some children may not feel very smart. If they can tease someone of limited intelligence, the feel better. It makes them feel smarter.
Brothers and sisters
Most brothers and sisters tease each other. There are in competition for the same parental attention. This may be worse if someone is an only child for several years. A new baby will receive a lot of the attention and love. This may cause jealousy and resentment. The child may feel abandoned or unloved.
Parents and favoritism
If you pay more attention to one child than the others, it is favoritism. Children see this as a huge injustice. They feel there must be reasons for this. Rather than blame you, they may blame themselves. This can severely damage young egos. This is why favoritism has to be avoided.
Favoritism with grandparents
Grandparents may be more guilty of favoritism than parents. Their child raising years are behind them. They may not feel that they are subject to the same rules as parents. One child may receive better gifts than the others. This is sending a message to the other grandchildren, that they are not important. This can be devastating to young children.
Bullies
Bullying is another problem in schools today. People of limited intelligence will often bully others to feel superior. This serves to completely ruin a child’s sense of self-worth. It is important for parents to keep the lines of communication open with their children. Asking may not be enough. Sometimes you have to dig deeper.
Conclusion
There are many causes of low self esteem. Appearance plays a major role. How a child is raised, may be just as important. Never favor one child over another. This can destroy their self-image. Talk to your kids as much as you can. Find out if someone is bullying them.
